Update on Luis Diaz parents kidnapping attempt

We continue to receive conflicting reports regarding the kidnapping of Luis Diaz’s parents on Saturday night.

Diaz’s mother has been rescued in the early hours, but police were continuing to search for his father.

However, local media from the La Guajira region reported that Diaz’s dad had been freed following a police rescue mission, which resulted in the deaths of two of the four kidnappers.

Since then, further updates suggest that Luis’ father was still being held captive and has been taken to Venezuela. This is also unconfirmed and we will bring an official update as soon as possible.

Liverpool Football Club had earlier issued a statement saying: “It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our immediate priority.”

As the team prepared for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest, Jurgen Klopp had to take the situation into account when selecting his team.

“We had to obviously make a late change because of the private situation involving Luis Diaz,” said the Liverpool boss. “It was a pretty tough night. I have never had that before. It’s a new experience I never needed.”
