So Long Emre

Emre Can’s protracted contract noegotiations, in which the German has insisted publicly that he wants to stay at Liverpool while at the same time allowing his agent to court a number of clubs around Europe with a view to a big money move once his current deal expires this summer, leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

It’s now common knowledge that the German midfielder has reportedly already agreed a five-year contract with Juventus.

It harks back to the method used by Michael Owen before he eventually fled for Real Madrid in 2004. Ironically, that year the Chester-born striker claimed he was leaving for a ‘big club’ he left behind a Liverpool squad who would go on to win the European Cup for the fifth time in Istanbul. It doesn’t get any bigger!

Fast forward 14 years and Emre Can may still be fortunate enough to lift the European Cup with Liverpool in Kiev, but it certainly won’t look like a move to a bigger club if and when he joins the Old Lady in the summer. He will be walking away from the European Champions, managed by arguably the best manager in the world at the moment and a teammate in Mo Salah who is arguably the best player in the world.

So long Emre and thanks for all the Brylcream!
