One step forwards, two steps back

Liverpool’s shortlived return in form was halted in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night.

After wins against Everton and Newcastle in the Premier League, the Reds were in high spirits going into the Champions League tie with Real Madrid at Anfield.

The fans were up for it, with red flare smoke filling the streets around the ground as the team bus arrived, showing how much European nights mean.

Liverpool were fast out of the blocks when the game started. They showed the determination and desire that has been sadly for much of this season and were swiftly rewarded when Darwin Nunez backheeled the ball into the net after only four minutes. Mo Salah capitalised on a Courtois error to make it 2-0 after only 14 minutes. This was going to be a drubbing, we all thought.

Then the game turned. Madrid composed themselves, got back into the game to go into the break level. They continued where they left off in the second half, while Liverpool lost all composure and capitulated. The game ended 5-2. We were all dejected and coming to terms with being knocked out of the competition when we go to the Bernabeu in three weeks time.

That brings us straight back to where we were. Jurgen Klopp must now rally his troops and get their self-belief back in time for Saturday night’s Premier League clash at Crystal Palace. Let’s hope we can brush off that last result and claw something back from this season.
