Liverpool’s European hopes given boost by Man Utd

It’s not often that Liverpool are thankful for Manchester United’s achievements but their FA Cup semi-final victory over Brighton on Sunday gives the Reds a better chance of playing European football next season.

The top four clubs in the Premier League qualify for the Champions League, with fifth place and the FA Cup winners given a place in the Europa League. However, because both Manchester clubs are in the FA Cup final and both are expected to finish in the top four, the club finishing sixth will also qualify for the Europa League.

Not only that but the team winning the League Cup earns a place in the Europa Conference League. As Man Utd won that then the club finishing in seventh will instead qualify.

Obviously, we all remain hopeful that Liverpool can claim that fourth spot, but if not then there is still now a very high chance of European football next season.
