A step back in the right direction

Monday night’s 6-1 win at Elland Road wasn’t just about claiming three valuable Premier League points. It was about regaining some of that swagger that Liverpool appear to have lost this season.

Going into the game the pundits were fully prepped with a list of stats showing just how bad Liverpool have been away from home and against the bottom six clubs this season.

In fact the only stat going in our favour seemed to be the fact we were unbeaten in the last five trips to Elland Road.

The Reds started the game confidently, dominating possession and, unlike other games recently, not stressing too much about trying to get an early goal. They showed more patience, no silly mistakes and a confidence not seen since the 7-0 drubbing of Man Utd.

Eventually we got the opening goal, then a second and we looked like the Liverpool of old, while Leeds looked like the Leeds of old too – absolutely terrible.

The home side pulled one back straight after half-time, grabbing the ball out of the net and running back to the halfway line in the misguided hope they could turn things around. However again, unlike previous games, heads didn’t drop and Liverpool didn’t panic. They continued on the same path and continued to dominate and score goals.

The 6-1 scoreline was a fair reflection of the performance and will silence the statisticians for a while.
