Xabi Alonso is the front-runner to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager this summer and the sooner an agreement is made the better, and we can all relax.
However, football doesn’t work that way. What initially appeared to be a no-brainer of a move quickly became complicated, with Bayern Munich also being linked with Alonso after confirming that they are parting ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.
According to Bild, Liverpool have made contact with Alonso’s agent Inaki Ibanez. however, the Spaniard still has two years remaining on his contract at Bayer Leverkusen.
His first season in Germany saw him lift his team out of relegation danger and into Europe. This season they are currently eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and almost certain of Champions League football next term.
Apparently, Leverkusen are in no panic about the situation and are confident they can hold onto Alonso for at least one more season. We just now have to wait to see what Alonso wants to do…
