Defender loan move on the cards

Sepp van den Berg is set to join FC Schalke on loan.

Blackburn Rovers were hopeful of signing the 20-year-old Dutch centre-back but he expected to head for the Bundesliga instead.

Jurgen Klopp’s defensive injury crisis appears to be coming to an end, with Joel Matip and Calvin Ramsay now back in training.

Van den Berg has spent the last 18 months on loan at Championship side Preston North End. He returned to Liverpool in the summer and has been on the subs bench for the opening four games of the season.

Now that other players are back his opportunities of first-team football appear to be remote, with the possible exception of Carabao Cup games, so a season-long loan to Germany seems to be a good option.

The big question remains though – will Liverpool bring in a midfielder before the transfer window closes on Thursday?
