The Occasion

By Finton Bell

It was the 10th anniversary of the disaster at Hillsborough, fans from all over flocked to Anfield to remember, protest, and indeed to get behind the team, families, friends and those who lost their lives so innocently!

The Villa won the game one-nil with a soft goal by Ian Taylor but they too contributed with Mark Bosnich and others, joined by the Liverpool players in laying flowers behind the goals!

The fans held banners and the Kop each holding up the individual cards to form “96” in the middle of two candles! The noise went on for 90 minutes, mostly songs and chants towards the occasion. Yes there’s still some anger for what happened in the hearts of many and in ways that added to the whole show of togetherness that is Anfield!

Anfield was surrounded by flowers, scarves, jerseys (even foreigners and Evertonians showing respect by leaving the tops of their club on the Shankly Gates, the Shankly Statue draped in Liverpool products, everywhere around Anfield was covered with respect.

I have never heard ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ sang with so much passion and emotion!

It was my greatest memory of Anfield, yes tears shed, but this time round it was not for the result!

When Anfield goes it will be a sad time for the club but once again the greatness that is the Liverpool fans will no doubt show the world that our memories will live on!

That was for me a great occasion!
